Stress behind the wheel
It is most likely that stress cannot be avoided during activities such as driving vehicles. However, it is good to acknowledge the danger and eliminate several factors that could influence it.
What is the most common cause of stress for professional drivers? It is said to be time restrictions, responsibility for the cargo, fear of on-road check-ups and increased liability for the transported load – for example if the vehicle is carrying dangerous materials – ADR. Maybe the biggest factor influencing stress is the possibility of being involved in a road traffic accident.
If the human body is exposed to stressful situation over long periods of time, it can result in chronic stress and subsequent feelings of anxiety, depression, digestive problems, migraines, heart conditions, sleep problems, weight problems and difficulties with concentration and memory. Stress can also increase the risk of contracting Alzheimer’s disease or asthma.
Stressful situations cannot be avoided. It is essential not to worsen the situation with a bad approach such as a dangerous style of driving, risk-taking or aggressive behaviour while driving. It is important to increase the resistance to stress by focusing on a healthy lifestyle through regular sleep and exercise and other methods of relaxation.
In all cases (and especially behind the wheel), it is true that: Don’t do to others what you would not wish done to yourself.
